Learning to defend my beliefs
I was Catholic, yet I was challenged by Dr. Adams in religion classes. Prior to each class I would have to visit with an understanding priest who would help me "defend" the Catholic position, in certain cases in Prof. Olds' class.

Thundering voices of prophets
Chaplain Max Adams made these thunderous and sometimes humorous portraits of the grand prophets in "Old Testament History"—High drama and they became real!

On a first name basis
I remember being in “Old Testament History.” Dr. Adams had been at our house for dinner the night before and as you know, class was pretty dull, so I was dozing a bit when Dr. Adams asked me a question and I replied, “What was that Max?” He gave me a look and went right on.

It ain’t necessarily so...
The class in “Old Testament History” that I took from Dr. Adams was introduced by Sammy Davis, Jr. singing “It ain’t necessarily so” from Porgy and Bess. It was okay to question the literal interpretation of the Old Testament in that class.
