Traveling to Yugoslavia
My exceptional experience participating in the SPAN group trip to Yugoslavia in 1955 led to life-long friendships, love of travel and appreciation of life in these United States.

The secret to world peace?
I was involved with the foreign students association and felt so fortunate to have met many people from many nations, learned of their lives, homes and countries. I wonder if there would be fewer wars if more people would learn more about other countries and their people. A great school—Macalester.

Out on the town
My good Japanese friend, Junki Marouka, had invited me to go to Tales of Hoffman. When the dorm buzzer buzzed I wished that I had not accepted the invitation. I felt sooooo tall standing next to him. I felt uncomfortable when we first got there as people were really looking us over. We sat with a group of foreign students and it felt good sitting with all these kids of different colors and cultural backgrounds. I found out that they seemed to learn and experience so much more at school than I. We had coffee at a drive-in and he “bowled” over the waitress by speaking to her in French. I got back to the dorm on time and realized what a great time that I had.
