Dressing outlandishly for dinner
The one place we girls came together from our far-flung homes and different life styles was in the dormitory. It was a challenge learning to share living space, find new friends and make peace with the strictures imposed, after our hard earned freedoms so recently won at home.  Having spent all day in class (we actually did that!), then coming back to the dorm to study, dine and study some more, many of us were left with a lot of untapped youthful energy.  Trapped in our dormitories with time on our hands we invented silly games, parties and ceremonies with appropriate (or inappropriate) costuming.

Friday night we were allowed to dress casually for dinner and, over time, this deteriorated into outlandish getups.  Our Housemother, Mrs. Carlson, whose own daughter was a sorority girl at the University of Minnesota, was most disapproving, which only inspired us more. My recollection is that this behavior lasted only through most of our sophomore year, by which time maturity and sanity returned, along with some loosening of rules and regulations.

Sneaking out to White Castle
In the days of house mothers and curfews, I lived with Donna Beernink in Summit House our junior and senior years. One spring night, about 10:30 p.m. (week night curfew was 10 p.m., remember?) and homework finished, we were both restless and hungry. We climbed out our first story window—hearts pounding—on the Snelling side and walked to White Castle for a hamburger. It was great fun to break the rules—EEK! Could we have been expelled?—Only grounded, I think. It still makes me smile.

Fond memories from Wally Hall
I would have to say that my fondest memories involve Wally Hall and the friendships that began there. Many of those friendships are still special after fifty years.
