Hitchhiking to St. Thomas
We used to hitchhike down Summit Ave. to the St. Thomas games. Our first car to stop was Dr. Adams, who suggested our mode of transportation was not brilliant, but could be dangerous. Us? College freshmen? Who was he to lecture us??

I remember Saturday mornings having a hot roll at Farley's Drug Store—wearing slacks!

The opening of The Green Mill
The Green Mill opened while we were at Macalester. It was easy walking distance from campus and a great Friday and Saturday evening hangout. By the time we were seniors, most of us were 21 and could drink legally. That year the management sold genuine German beer steins for $5. Each one had a number on the bottom, so when we went in we could order a beer just by giving the waiter our stein number. The hamburgers were good and social life there great.
