Love & Love Lost

Driving down River Road
Not having much to do one Sunday afternoon in September, I drove my car along the River Road and passed Konrad Kaltenbach, whom I knew from Presbyterian youth activities and another man I did not know. They were hitchhiking so I stopped and offered them a ride. The other man was Karl Anuta. During the ensuing conversation Karl offered to take me to a movie since I was complaining that I had had no dates in the year I had been at Macalester. Karl and I got married soon after I graduated.

The “At what price?” engagement
In my senior year I stayed in Section Three and my roommates were Charles Johnson and Dick Flathman. Dick had very strong DFL and some Socialist views. Charles was then statewide Chair of the College Federation of Republican Clubs. I was active in the Macalester Chapter of the College Federation. The three of us often had endless political arguments. Dick admonished the two of us and we him. Nancy Wold was Dick’s long time girlfriend and he decided to give her a well-deserved engagement ring which he showed us before the big night. We waited eagerly for his return from Wallace Hall to learn the details of the event. He described it in some detail and said that Nancy had revealed something of great importance to him. It turned out that she owned a considerable amount of stock in the Seattle firm, Rainier Brewing. With a sheepish grin on his face he said to us, “I guess I am going to have to give up this Socialist crap”.
