Married Life

One of our best decisions in life
I attended Macalester because of my marriage to Barbara Risinger ’57. Barb and I attended a year at Eastern College in St. Davids, PA. It was an American Baptist school and I wanted to be a Baptist minister. When I was told I had to take a prescribed, very narrow course of studies we both decided it wasn't the school for us. We both enrolled at Mac where Barb wanted to go in the first place. It was one of our best decisions in life. Going to Mac was an exhilarating experience. It was not so much about the courses or the faculty. Mac taught us how to question and how to think. It prepared us for a world unknown.

Mature enough to skip chapel
Chapel was mandatory for students, except for married students like me. I was told that the reason was that married students were mature enough to go to church voluntarily and also by chance there was not enough room for everyone in the chapel and the deficiency in seating equalled the number of married students.

Marriage improves grades
While at Macalester, I met and married Kathryn Babcock ('54) in 1953. We took several classes together, including a religious course from Dr. Adams. Kay had 2 finals the next day, including Dr. Adam's open book take home exam. I had only the open book test so after I finished it, I gave my test to Kay to use as a model for her test. A few days later, we got back our graded tests. We both had a note attached to ours, "It's certainly a tribute to a Christian marriage when two people think so alike, even in Phraseology!" Kay got an A and I got a B!

Get me to the track on time
On the last day of school, wed college sweetheart Connie Schwarting. We jumped a train to Milwaukee, Wisc. to be at the National Track Meet the next day. I placed fifth against the U of M, U of Wisconsin and Kansas State, as well as Alotter—who went on to be five-time Olympic world champ. Pretty good for 195-pounder from little Macalester!
