Sickness & Health in the Infirmary

Unexplainable nausea
It was the last week of classes before graduation. I was in Prof. Jones’ office for a science class when I felt nauseous and fainted. After several attempts to keep me vertical, Prof. Jones and a classmate “dragged” me across campus to the infirmary. Once there, the staff asked if I could be pregnant. I said no. Then I was asked if I could be pregnant. Again, I said no and then in exasperation blurted out, “How could I possibly be pregnant? I haven’t seen my husband since last August, when he went in the service to Korea.” I’ll always remember the smirks and the heads shaking as they turned aside. Naivety at it’s finest! I was a guest in the infirmary for two days recuperating from exhaustion and did not have to take finals.
