The big and little choirs
While at Macalester, I had a work contract for two years in the Student Union with Harold Goltz and Dr. Miller. I enjoyed the big Mac Choir, practicing in the old Conservatory and was a member of the Little Choir under the direction of Ian Morton. So many friends in the musical field… I took vocal lessons with Tollefson.

Beethoven’s Ninth
Singing in the choir under the direction of Ian Morton was a special time at Mac for me. Who can forget the thrill of singing Beethoven's Ninth under the direction of Antal Dorati.

Singing at the post office
During Christmas Vacation, I worked at the downtown St. Paul Post Office with a number of other Macalester students, including some members of the Par Four Quartet—my brother Chic Tjornhom and my cousin Tom Tjornhom. We worked the graveyard shift which started at 11:00 p.m. and ended at 7:00 a.m. The work schedule usually started out fairly busy until about 3:00 a.m. Then during the slack time, we used to sing barbershop tunes until the supervisor came by and told us to knock it off and get back to work. This was difficult as most of the mail was already sorted and we were bored until the next load came in. Sometimes we would take short naps with our heads on the counter until the supervisor came around again. This is where I acquired a taste for pickled herring as someone always brought a jar of it every night along with the crackers. Sometimes the herring juice spilled on the mail and we always wondered if mail recipients wondered why their mail smelled like fish. I also had a day job driving a delivery truck for Glemaker Furs. So, I went home, ate breakfast and went to work at 8:00 a.m. By 4:00 p.m., I was usually a basket case trying to stay awake driving that truck and delivering fur coats. The "vacation" days went by quickly.
