Counsel in time of tragedy
Ann’s father, John Beran, died on February 10, 1956, at age 53 of a heart attack. I had planned for giving Ann an engagement ring on Valentine’s Day, but that was the day of John’s funeral. It was also Religion-In-Life Week and Ann was a leader. We went from the funeral home to Dr. Max Adams’ house to meet with Speaker Robert McAfee Brown. Both Ann and I credit Max Adams and R.M. Brown for getting us through this tragedy, which was the beginning of my own journey from business to ministry.

That haunting feeling
Singing the Brahms Requiem during Religion in Life week, our senior year, was an incredibly spiritual experience. Yes, we (Macalester Choir) sang it every year and it was always beautiful, but something was different in 1956. Perhaps it was the emotion of realizing it would be our last time. There seemed to be a spirit of holiness about our music making that night, as if we were being blessed and heard in a whole other realm. Did anyone else feel it? Choir members? Listeners? Orchestra? I mentioned it to Dick Gehrenbeck some years later and he recalled it much the same way as I did.
