My first job teaching
My dream when leaving Macalester was to be a great teacher. Also one reason I opted for the Miss Woods two-year program was to get out teaching to earn all that money. Would you believe that my starting salary was $2700.00 a year? I learned that the money was not important. It is the satisfaction of helping and shaping the lives of young people. One funny experience with my kindergarten class back in 1956 was that the children had mats to rest on. During parent-teacher conferences this mom and her son, George, said Miss Beadle had kicked him in the head everyday during nap time! Of course I had not done this. He is now a lawyer here in La Crosse, Wis.

Living at Wood Hall
I began my years at Mac as a Miss Woods student. We lived at Wood Hall. In 2004, 14 of us Miss Woods students held our 50th Class Reunion.

Close quarters in Wood Hall
Looking back at my years at "Mac" 50 years ago (unbelievable that it's been that long, I'm not that old!), I have so many fond memories it's difficult to pinpoint the special ones. One in particular was when all 12 or so of us girls at the dorm, Wood Hall, lived upstairs. Talk about close quarters! It was great and we are all so close still. If I would do it again, I would probably go for the four-year degree. However, the Miss Woods two-year program was excellent and I benefited from it in all four years of teaching.
