Reunion 2007: Class of 1957

Our 50-Year Reunion is in June 2007!

In Memory
Konrad J. Kaltenbach ’57

Passed away in 2003.

Reflections from Carol Kellogg Kaltenbach Stoub ’57.

Konrad attended Macalester from 1953-54. He was a Junior Year Abroad student through the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, 1955-1956. He transferred to the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1957.

He and Carol Kellogg, whom he met in Lebanon, were married in 1956 and she transferred to Macalester and graduated in 1957. They had two children, Konrad John Jr. and Lois.

Konrad studied at McCormick Seminary and graduated in 1961. He served churches in Sturgis and Paw Paw, Michigan. He was the Assistant Dean of the Chapel and taught ethics at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. He was called to the Washington Presbyterian Church in Washington, Ill., where a major accomplishment was restoring the sanctuary to its historical condition. He served as the Associate Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grange, Ill., specializing in adult education. He was called as associate pastor then head of staff at the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Ohio. He attended the University of Indiana Medical School to receive an advanced certification in hospital chaplaincy. He served in the Huntendon County Medical Center in New Jersey for many years. Konrad also served as stated supply for several churches during difficult transitions.

His love of Maple Leaf Island in Sioux Narrows, Ontario, Canada, continued throughout his lifetime. He lived to see a new cabin built by his son and to pass the wilderness legacy to his children and grandchildren. He never lost his sense of humor, way with words or the power of God's presence in the pulpit or hospital room.

Konrad died in October of 2003. He is survived by his son Konrad John Kaltenbach Jr. his wife Suzanne and grandchildren Konrad and Kristina who live in Dallas, Texas. His daughter Lois and her husband Greg Basil have two daughters Hannah and Hope who reside in Chicago, Ill.

Konrad leaves his widow Janet Kaltenbach who resides in Bloomsbury, N.J. Carol Kellogg Kaltenbach Stoub lives in La Grange, Ill.

Konrad was a man of God who lived his life with great gusto and faithfulness. He loved Macalester as his father the Reverend Gustof Adolf served on the board of Directors and his sisters also attended Macalester. Perhaps the legacy will continue through his grandchildren.
