I married Audrey DeLong ’58, who I proposed to after the Christmas formal (the Snow Ball) in 1955. We met in a required first-hour science class. We have four children, ages 37 to 45, and eight grandchildren, ages 2 to 18. Audrey officially graduated from Macalester with a degree in Religious Studies in 1980.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and a minor in English Literature, I went to work in accounting.
I have worked for Remington Rand Univac, U S Army, Owens Illinois, Container Corp of America and H B Fuller. My work has been in accounting my entire career except when I was in the Military Service. I retired from H B Fuller December 31, 2001, after 35-plus years. During that time, I held positions of financial analyst, Region Controller and Division Controller. I was responsible for all financial aspects of the Packaging Division, including budgeting, and financial reporting. Was also responsible for the operations of six regional accounting offices.
In retirement, I am almost a professional volunteer, volunteering my time with three organizations year round and an additional one during the Christmas season. I am humbled by the awards and special recognitions I’ve received: twice Volunteer of the Year for H B Fuller Co, McKnight award for Humanitarian Service, Special recognition for volunteer services from AccountAbility Minnesota, Simpson Shelter, Salvation Army, Emma Norton Residence, Prison Fellowship, Martin Luther King Community Center, CLUES Community Center, WCCO Good Neighbor and The United Methodist Church. I have also received honorable mention three times from 11 Who Care.
I still have my Lionel Model Railroad; still collect US commemorative postage stamps; travel and do a lot of scenic photography. I also spend as much time as I can at our lake place on Woman Lake near Hackensack. Every year for the past 15 years we have spent a week, late in January, at Cozumel, Mexico, an island off the Yucatan Peninsula. I enjoy our eight grandchildren and like spending time with them, especially when we get together to celebrate birthdays or they come to visit us at our lake home.
