See my Remember When stories:
· Adams and Warner
· The "big" choir
· Not demonstrating hard enough

I married college classmate and sweetheart, Nancy Knauff, in 1958. We have lived in Red Wing, Minn., for 39 years where we raised our two children. Our son graduated from Luther College and has his Masters Degree from Iowa State; our daughter graduated from St. Thomas.

We enjoy traveling. We were first drawn to the Caribbean, then many trips to Hawaii and now we enjoy trips to Europe with an occasional trip to Asia or South America.

I served on the Red Wing School Board for 10 years, four years as chairman, and served on the International Board of Kiwanis for three years. I also chaired Red Wing Chamber of Commerce, Interstate Rehab Center, and Sons of Norway. One of the more fun things was to chair a pipe organ task force for our church. We now have a new organ that was paid for before it was installed.

I graduated from Stonier Graduate School of Banking and was President of the Minnesota Chapter of Robert Morris Associates, the lending side of the banking industry. An interesting experience was being involved in re-opening two banks that had failed under other management and ownership.

My philosophies are:

  1. Treat all people with respect. You do not gain respect unless you give respect.
  2. I believe in leadership in a work environment. You lead people and you manage things.
  3. My idea of a performance review is to ask yourself "If I were going to go across the street and open a new bank — would I want to take this person along?" Then, deal with the answer accordingly. After my first retirement, I had the opportunity to "live this dream" when I selected a team of people to open a new bank — for somebody else.

Macalester reaffirmed values gained from my parents and from having grown up in a small community. Our chosen legacy is to financially help all eight grandchildren through college.

See my Remember When stories:
· Professors who took an interest in us

After Macalester, I attended the University of Minnesota Medical School. Kay and I were married just before my senior year. After internship, we moved to Montana where I worked for two years at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. Then we bundled up our two young children and moved back to Minneapolis to begin a General Surgery residence at Hennepin County General Hospital. Following completion, and with a third child in tow, we moved to Willmar, Minn., where I began a surgical practice with a multi-specialty group. During a sabbatical, I completed a hand surgery fellowship, so was able to concentrate on hand problems during the last dozen years of practice. Our fourth child, who has now become my regular canoe trip partner, was born in Willmar.

In retirement, Kay and I have been lucky to enjoy good health. We now live on an old farm north of Willmar. I've been able to have a second career working with conservation concerns and groups, managing the farm for wildlife, and teaching at our local environmental learning center. We have three grandchildren who live nearby, and we enjoy being a part of their lives.

See my Remember When stories:
· Believers’ or skeptics’ hour

I have a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and a certificate in psychoanalysis from the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. I worked eight years in a child and family clinic at the University of Illinois Medical Center. I left there to work half time in my private practice and to teach half time at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. I was married 12 years, then divorced, and am now in a relationship that feels very fulfilling. My only child, Paul, is 43. He is head of a translation department at a law firm and teacher of translation at a local university. I love to travel with my son and his friends in the Far East but have also enjoyed travel in Europe, South America and North America.

Macalester helped me to become more independent in thought and behavior and to deepen and broaden my interest in learning, thinking and understanding. It also helped me to develop a great capacity for self-reflection and reflection on the interaction of multiple psychological, social and cultural factors and dynamics that contribute to personal, interpersonal and systemic processes and events. These areas of development contributed to my graduate school and postgraduate teaching and in my clinical work with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families.
