Suggestion for Class Soundtrack:
"My Old School" by Steely Dan
The lyric "I ain't never goin' back to my old school" was wrong, but they had it right in great music that we really got into back in those days. Before there were iPods, before you could burn a CD, friends made tapes of great songs for each other...

Dad of three teenagers (this is interesting); Spouse of one St. Olaf grad (this is challenging); Still living near Macalester (this is great); Still close with several friends from those wonderful college days (this is most fortunate).

Definitely working too much — I run an imported car dealership. This is sometimes interesting — definitely relaxing too little (I'm so ready for some exotic travel, car auctions don't quite cut it). Definitely not getting enough sleep — my major vice is now Starbucks Italian Roast, but I'm still trying to stay awake until my kids come home on weekends.

My Mac Memories: Wow, some people have really excellent detail in their memories. I remember wonderful friends, intellectual stimulation, great idealism, wild road trips, outrageous indulgences… but it's just a little fuzzy in some of the details suitable for... Sincerely looking forward to seeing you at the Reunion. Please do come.

Suggestion for Class Soundtrack:
"Take Me To The River" by Talking Heads
Because it was on the jukebox and when I hear it (the original version of course) I can still conjure up the taste of the cheese hash browns at the greasy spoon... mmm…

Recently remarried to a Lawrence University grad, Laura Jones, and having a grand time with our blended family of three kids, Adrian (19), Emma (16) and Emily (11). Working as a principal hydro-geologist in an environmental consulting firm that I co-founded with seven others in 2002. Living in and loving Portland, Oregon.

My Mac Memories:
(random thoughts in no particular order)

  • laying on my dorm room bed and sweating all night long during our first week of school,
  • nearly being arrested for photo-documenting the Grand Ave. snowball fight (I didn’t touch a snowball),
  • Mac Cinema -- Psycho, Diabolique and other classics!
  • Hanging with Anita Hageman on weekend Mac operator duty,  KMAC to WMCN transition,
  • running Saga lines as a Freshman and taking leftover steaks and shrimp back to 5th floor Dupre,
  • winning intramural basketball,
  • Macites Against the Draft,
  • the South Africa Divestment Committee,
  • setting up the A/V equipment and being backstage at Ted Kennedy’s presidential candidate visit to the Mac gym,
  • Daniel Berrigan, Eugene McCarthy visiting campus and calling for a draft that included everyone (men and women, young and old),
  • Barry Commoner’s graduation speech (1980?),
  • listening to EB’s stories and wondering how much was true (he claimed it was all true ),
  • meeting John Edwards freshman year on 5th floor Dupre and rooming with him in Stadium our Sophomore year,
  • the dorm room lottery,
  • 1808 Portland Avenue,
  • going to the John Lennon candlelight memorial at the foot of Summit Ave.,
  • going to free Prairie Home Companion shows all over,
  • geology field trips and learning how to make a Manhattan from Henry Lepp,
  • Henry Lepp’s story of the tornado coming right toward his house,
  • cheese hashbrowns at the greasy spoon (what was the real name of that place anyway ),
  • Eggplant parmesan sandwiches from the Italian place across Snelling (I don t remember that name either),
  • quarter beers at the bar on St. Clair (OK, restaurant and bar names are not my thing),
  • Chicago blues in the Student Union,
  • seeing Odetta and other folk singers in the old gym and then leaving into the freezing cold minus-40 wind chill of January…
