I'm a professor of music at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. I've been teaching there since 1992 — lucky to have job security in higher education. I also serve as artistic director of The Syracuse Vocal Ensemble, a semi-professional chamber choir in the area. They're a great group, so, again, very lucky for me.
I live in Geneva with my wife Margaret (a Hamline grad!). We have two wonderful kids. Our daughter Emily (19) is a first-year student at Sarah Lawrence College outside of New York City. Our son Adrian (16) is sophomore in high school. Life has been up and down, but mostly up; hope the same is true for each of you.
My Mac Memories: Carpooling from home the first year with Lynn Grotenhuis ’82 (Lynn, where did the years go?!). Spending endless hours in the Music Department in Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center. All the incredible time spent with other dedicated singers in Concert Choir. All the great times living in Wallace and Bigelow.
Will you please come to this reunion so it will be fun? I do environmental work for a living, and I enjoy long walks, sunsets, good wine and causing trouble... I am chairing a local city council campaign, have started a car-sharing organization in Minneapolis-St. Paul, immensely enjoying my family, and thinking hard about letting my hair go gray... we'll see about that.
My Mac Memories: You read about some of them in the first reunion letter! The unbelievably awful Interpersonal Relations class, the mild-to-moderately abusive French department, the relentless drug culture, the very funny and hugely inappropriate professor-student love relationships, and the sadness of watching great profs being denied tenure. There were some amazing moments, too, but overall it was a time of relentless second-ratedness. Glad things have changed on campus! I love Mac now, the students are unbelievable, and campus looks great, if a bit too suburban. Come see it and we'll remind each other of the good parts.
I work for the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News in advertising and marketing. Total chaos every day, and I truly love it!
My Mac Memories: What a kick those pictures are! I guess mostly I remember laughing and smiling almost all of the time. Macalester was one of the real high points in my life.
