Discussion — The Things They Carried
Tim O’Brien’s 1990 book The Things They Carried — the common reading
for this year’s Reunion — was chosen by the New York Times as one of the
most important works of fiction published in the last 25 years. Based on
his experiences as a soldier during the Vietnam War, the book is a
collection of interrelated stories about a single platoon. O’Brien, whose
novel was also chosen for the citywide reading program, St. Paul Reads,
will receive a Distinguished Citizen Citation at Reunion. Sponsored by the Classes of 1967, 1968 and 1969.
