How did I end up in Green Bay? I still don't have any friends after three years here, maybe willfully, but work is good.
I teach at an elementary school, 2nd grade in the morning, 4th and 5th in the afternoon. I teach the children of the real Green Bay packers. They work in the slaughterhouses and meatpacking plants. They speak Spanish, and I teach their kids to read and write in the language they already know, so that they keep learning higher-order thinking while they're learning the basics of English. On weekends in the winter, I teach kids to play curling as a volunteer. In the spring, I actually get paid to coach high school tennis.
All the rest of my time is spent visiting my fiancé in southern Mexico. We'll be married next summer, and then she'll move back to Green Bay with me until we find a better town. She's a teacher, too. Would I turn down a job in Saint Paul? Hell no!
My Mac Memories: As a professional educator, it wouldn't be appropriate to post what I really want to. Ask me at the reunion. As for non-career-jeopardizing recollections, I have to include the Peace Camp, Wednesday night ethics with Jen Everett and the smoking crew, ultimate pickup, silver tabs, the mural of Flutie dust jackets, forgetting my native tongue for a night, all-nighters and more all-nighters... the list could go on for quite a while. The more it hurt, the more I love that I survived it, and the more fun it was, the more amazed I am that I got away with it. We did all enjoy some privileges, and most of us are still paying for them. But let's not talk about that last part at the reunion.
I tried to leave. I swear! I have witnesses.
I'm in my 3rd year of law school at the U. of Minn. and I work for the Hennepin County Attorney's Office in the Violent Crimes division. Mostly I help trial attorneys prosecute felonies, but they let me handle some little things all on my own, like being in the park after hours or having an unleashed pet. Serious times yo! Woo-hoo!
My Mac Memories: Streaking midnight breakfast. Dupre 4W living. Lots and lots of chili ramen. Kagin and the food fight aftermath. Bagpipes. SPO-ing. Crush notes. QU dance.
