After graduating from Mac, I had a theatre company, worked for Aveda for a while and lived in the artist lofts in Lowertown, St. Paul. I then decided to work in social services using the arts as a tool to work for social justice. After a few years, I felt the call to move West and came to Seattle where I have been now for nine years. I received my Masters of Social Work from the University of Washington in 2001 and did my masters thesis research in India on trafficking of women/girls into the sex industry. I worked as the Education Director of a non-profit dedicated to issues of post-9/11 backlash in immigrant/refugee communities for five years. I am now teaching full time at the University of Washington School of Social Work in the graduate and undergraduate programs. Interestingly, I just taught a course with a woman named Gita and we found out we were both at Mac at the same time! I live with my sweetheart and cat in a house in south Seattle (Columbia City).
My Mac Memories: First year in Third Bigelow and crazy roommate adventures; eagerly going to check mail in the union; gross meals in the dining hall; Patrick Dousa ’92; shopping on Grand Ave.; looking up cute people in the Spotlight; Christian Novetzke ’93 and Kevin Lally singing below my window; struggling through Russian class; second year first semester in Dupre single and then getting the hell out of there second semester; sound of bagpipes in the morning; theatre productions; doing artwork outside of the classrooms in the spring; late nights in the computer lab and library; buying records at Cheapos; playing music in the flying fingers...
After a series of meaningless jobs, I moved back home to Swarthmore, Pa., where I began a landscaping job with Fine Garden Creations. I began attending hort. classes at Longwood and eventually moved on to the New York Botanical Garden, in the Bronx, where I gardened for several years.
Soon thereafter, I was hired to work for Martha Stewart TV, where I dug holes and fetched rakes. This led to my current position — TV Field Producer — for Martha's new daytime show. It's a great job where I've met many interesting people, including my husband.
We married in Sept ’06 and live in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, with our dog. I still play music.
My Mac Memories:
- Singing in the stairwells with Kerith
- Dunn Brothers coffee shop
- Ruthann G.'s classes
- Learning to drive on ice
- Listening to all the great musicians
