Wow, 1993 was a long time ago. Interesting to see what people are up to. Well, after graduation, I moved out to Eugene, Oregon, where my then boyfriend/now husband Matt was living. I worked in a bookstore for a year, and then we got teaching-assistant positions in Austria for a year. After that, I attended Monterey Institute of International Studies, where I earned my MA in Translation. That was followed by a three-and-a-half-year stint in Mainz, Germany. We moved back to the Chicago area in 2001, and I started a freelance translation business. I now operate as Mozaika Language Services, Inc. and specialize in German-to-English business and financial translation. We have two daughters, ages 7 and 3. The whole family is studying Spanish in hopes of moving abroad again in a couple of years.
My Mac Memories:
- Studying abroad in Freiburg, Germany, where I met my husband Matt
- My dear roomie Kristi Costa ’93 and stargazing in our room thanks to those glow-in-the-dark constellations
- German classes with Ellis Dye and living in the German House — little did I know how much studying German would actually determine the future course of my life.

After graduation, I moved to back to Philadelphia to work for one of the eight pilot programs for AmeriCorps. I got lucky and ended up with an organization that gave me free reign and one year to design and fund a new affordable housing program for one of the city's least picturesque neighborhoods. That led to a similar gig back in St. Paul, which was significant mostly for getting me back to Jennifer Stewart ’91, who I eventually convinced to marry me.
Four years on Rice Street was enough, and after some thought, I took a job as a major gifts officer at the Carlson School of Management. Jennifer finished grad school and was offered a job in Boston so we moved here almost five years ago. I worked first for Harvard Law School and now Milton Academy.
We love living in Brookline, Mass. — even more so with Paul and Sarah Moghtader (both ’93) living up the street (see Sarah's note).
Most significant, however, was the birth of our son, Oliver, two and a half years ago. He rarely sleeps and loves to play the guitar — a deadly combination.
My Mac Memories:
- Chuck Green s lectures/conversations where the lesson always seemed to arrive like a punch line
- Gwen's blankie
- The Tan Van
- The guacamole couch
- Ceteris paribus
- Valentine's Day with Jordan, Sarah, and Aaron
- Late nights in the Poli-Sci office
- Living in the Ski Chalet
- And, any number of things I only tell my therapist
