During our freshman year at Mac I became interested in two things that would influence me for the rest of my life, one as a hobby and the other as part of my teaching career. I remember Bob Chance ’58, Ruth Ann Stricker Dayton ’57 and I drove around for most of an afternoon finding good locations for our photo shoots. Today, I regularly contribute photographs of collectible cars to Collectible Automobiles magazine, which has published over 70 of them.
In freshman English I wrote a term paper on Frank Lloyd Wright. That sparked a lifelong passion for architecture which ultimately resulted in my teaching specialty of Urban Environmental Design at Northeastern Illinois University, in Chicago. I curated two exhibits — Recycled Chicago and Diverse Chicago, Chicago Landmarks / Old Wicker Park. I also taught mural painting as an outgrowth of my 2-D Design class, and received an award from then-Mayor Jane Byrne for the last mural I directed.
After moving to San Francisco in 1981, I worked for a few years for Circle Fine Arts, which, at that time, leased the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in the city. It was such a pleasure working in that building and I felt that I had come full circle (pun intended) from that Wright term paper at Mac.
