As I reflect on the 50 years since leaving Macalester I’ve discovered I’m still consciously or maybe unconsciously committed to the same four principles that I had as a student:
1.) service to the larger community,
2.) education or life long learning,
3.) commitment to family, friends and causes, and
4.) constant change!
Certainly these have shaped my life in the various choices I’ve made.
After graduation I embarked on 20 years of teaching elementary school in Colorado and Minnesota. Throughout those years I was very involved in the community in which I lived, whether on nonprofit boards of directors, hands on volunteer positions or raising money for a variety of causes! I had the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds and careers. I also returned to Macalester to earn a master’s degree in 1967.
Then age 40 arrived! I decided 25 more years in the classroom was not for me, even though I thoroughly enjoyed this great profession. So for the next 20-plus years I was fortunate to be asked to work in the areas of alumni affairs (Macalester), development (United Hospital and Major Gifts, Inc.), public relations (Winston-Seabury Press), and sales (J. B. Hudson and Williams Sonoma)! I also served on the board of directors of a number of nonprofit organizations including Presbyterian Homes of Minnesota, The Dale Warland Singers, Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library, The Minnesota Humanities Commission, and the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota. And of course, I’ve always enjoyed my many years of involvement with Macalester through the Alumni Board, the Board of Trustees and various committees.
Now that I’ve retired from this paid employment and will soon retire from my last board of directors, I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen next! I love to travel both in the United States and abroad. I enjoy the wonderful cultural opportunities in the Twin Cities, the variety of educational programs, as well as the beautiful walking paths around the lakes. Though I have no children of my own, I am the Auntie Mame of a number of friends’ children. Thus, I too am entering into the joys of grandparenting!
I feel fortunate to say life has truly been a delight!
