My ‘Remember When’ stories:
· Sudden news at a winter game
· That potent perfume
· Dr. Turck's amazing memory
The writing skills learned from Professor Ivan Burg were important keys for me after graduating from Macalester.
First came 14 years as a reporter then editor at United Press International / Minneapolis bureau, Austin (Minn.) Daily Herald and Rochester (Minn.) Post-Bulletin. During the Rochester tenure, I met and married wife Liz. Our two kids, Dave and Kathy, also arrived while living there.
(Later, both graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead – not Mac! – and married. Both families moved back to the Twin Cities several years after Liz and I headed for Tucson. We have four neat grandchildren, ranging in age from 7 to 11.)
Then, a short but interesting seven months as a publishing house editor in Nassau, The Bahamas. A clash of Bahamian and U.S. east coast work cultures involving husband-wife publishers made that time zany, indeed!
The marketing/public relations area was next: working for a suburban Twin Cities hospital, State Waste Management Agency and Twin Cities areas tax-supported colleges. Two blips during that time found me working in a suburban community bank and owning a gift shop.
Since we moved to Tucson in mid-1998, I’ve managed to balance lots of golf with some part-time challenges as a corporate visitors group facilitator, small proprietary college marketing director and special projects writer for a State of Arizona division assistant director.
I fondly remember my Macalester days! It was a time for growing up since I was a rather young high school grad. It was a time for developing strong liberal arts values and learning workplace skills before arriving there. And it was a time for many, many fun activities (and some studying, too!) with good friends. It really doesn’t seem like 50 years ago!
