James R. Speetzen
Passed away in 1993
Written by his son, Dale Speetzen.
I remember, very vaguely, his graduation. I was seven years old at the time — he was 40. Dad was a non-traditional student when there weren't very many of them. After a full career in the Army, he enrolled at Macalester aspiring to a teaching career. When he started at "Mac" he was the father of four. Number five arrived while he was a student. There were three more later.
After graduation he taught Physical Education, English and Social Studies for the MN Department of Corrections in Red Wing. He also officiated high school football and basketball for many years. Sports (baseball, football, fishing, golf) were always part of his life whether as participant for spectator. I know that he kept track of Macalester sports teams throughout his life.
When he talked about "Mac" it was always with pride. He knew he had gotten a great education that served him well.
