Written by friend and classmate, Gayle Nechas Adelsman.
Marcia’s family had deep roots in northern Minnesota with a Burill family cabin that was built in the early 1900s on Pelican Lake near Cross Lake, Minn. The old log cabin became a special gathering place for Marcia’s Macalester friends.
Marcia taught in Appleton, Wis., and Robbinsdale, Minn. She married Ed Frerk in the early ’60s and they had three children — Rob, Kelly and Tracy. Ed taught in the Minneapolis Public Schools and Marcia was a stay-at-home mom for several years. When the family moved to Apple Valley in the mid ’80s, she began working as a library clerk at Echo Park Elementary where she continued working until her illness. She loved working with children’s books and the little kids. She also enjoyed knitting, skiing, golf and spending time at the old Burill family cabin with her beloved grandchildren.
Marcia died at age 61 from cancer. Her entire family and several Mac friends were with her in here final days of hospice care.
Marcia was the “glue” of fellowship in her Macalester “club,” a group of nine women friends from the classes of ’58 and ’59. She helped organize many years of potlucks and lake retreats at the Swanson cabin near her own family place on Pelican Lake. She was a spirited gal, delightfully fun and a most precious friend.
