Grandma and graduation
My Mac memories are summed up by two events on our graduation day. First, after the ceremony, my tiny grandmother came up and planted a grandma kiss on my cheek. Holding my face between her hands, she said, "Charles, we are so proud of you. No one in the family thought you would survive freshman year."

Later, as I moved through the post-graduation crowd saying farewell to friends, someone asked, "What are we going to do now?" I responded, "I've signed a contract to teach English 7 and drama in Windom." The questioner pursued future plans, "Will you teach in college?" I blinked, "Me teach in college? You've got to be kidding." (For 41 out of 43 years teaching, I taught Speech Communication and Theatre in colleges in Kansas and West Virginia.)
