Being a delegate for P-E Week
I was a faithful delegate and it was fun. This was just one more of the Mac opportunities. I’m glad I didn’t miss.

In preparation for Political Emphasis Week
One of my fondest memories of Macalester is serving on the steering committee for Political Emphasis Week in April 1958.
Prior to the big event, I went on a sleepless train ride with 40 other Mac students, along with Dr. Dorothy Dodge, to study for a week at the United Nations in New York. To think that Eleanor Roosevelt met privately with our group to discuss human rights was indeed a thrill of a lifetime! Our trip also included a visit to the Capitol in Washington D.C. and a meeting (and photo) with Senators Hubert Humphrey and Edward Thye. All of this was certainly a learning experience for this small town girl!
Back to Mac, we were now into the thick of PE Week and that meant finalizing the many details for our own "meeting of the General Assembly". Remember the keynote speech by Christian Herter, then Under-Secretary of State?

Comparatively tame topics of our Mock U.N.
In our senior year, during Political Emphasis Week, we held a mock United Nations and debated such ancient, tame issues as recognition of the People's Republic of China. Today we would be debating the bloody issues of Myanmar (formerly Burma), Darfur, The Gaza Strip, Iraq, and the threat the U.S. poses to Iran.
