Political laughs
By Gary H. Hickok
I remember malts at the Grill and at Farley's across Snelling, where I “borrowed” a current New Yorker to check out cartoons while sipping – almost choking! – with laughter.
A plan for fun
By Marijo Hunt Hickok
I remember the fun of dances, committee planning sessions for the fall retreat, and Religion in Life Week. It's amazing we got anything accomplished because we enjoyed each other so much.
A multitude of memories
By Louise Day Mattson
I remember the Mexican Caravan with El Jefe, Senor Dassett; Dr. Adams' religion classes; the family style dinners in Bigelow Hall; and the “Fish Bowl.”
The joys of college life
By Al Page
Getting caught by the campus cops sneaking coeds into the dorms after hours; choosing Dean Dupree's mustache as a Snow Days mystery treasure hunt; dating, as a freshman, a senior who later turned out to be married; being tortured by the Prof in “Histerical” Geology; writing a senior essay on whether anyone deserved a $100,000 salary; running cross-country during half-time during Carleton's homecoming; traveling to a track meet by car, getting ahead of the coach John King, getting out and jogging by the road then being chewed out by said John King; dancing in various variety shows; pretending to study in the library.
Our Hungarian guests
By Caroline Peeke Johnson
I remember the arrival of five Hungarian students on campus after a brief resistance in their homeland.
Let's have an Oski-Wow-Wow!
By Katharine (Kay) Cole Burke
When living in Palatine, Ill., I was a girl's house league soccer coach. One year while taking a team to Hamilton, Ontario, a very Scottish community, we had a gathering of visiting and local parents and coaches at a beer garden. Sometime during the evening I felt a need to stand and cheer, "Let's have an Oski-Wow-Wow! (Maybe it was due to the beverage.) To my amazement a resounding shout echoed back "and a whiskey wee wee!" I was stunned. I do not think there were other Macites in attendance. I found it was a legitimate Scottish cheer. I had many offers to dance the polka the rest of the evening!
Six quick tidbits
By Nancy Stuessy Mansergh
I remember when:
- the Mac Choir sang the Brahm's Requiem with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra with Dorati directing!
- the enthusiasm of Mary Gwen Owen made literature live!
- we would walk the campus in the fall, winter, and spring and see the beauty of the old and new buildings change with the seasons.
- the incoming freshman of Bigelow Hall would make new friends and enjoy new adventures at Mac.
- the social activities and sports events at Mac would make us feel like family.
- I visited the children of Mac professors as I was growing up before I became a Mac student.
Local delicacy
By Roland C. Lund
I enjoy all my experiences at Macalester, especially the delicious, warm, buttery cinnamon rolls at Grand Ave. Drug Store!
