We like Ike!
By Caroline Peeke Johnson
I remember candidate Eisenhower, standing in a convertible, waving, being driven down Summit Ave. We liked Ike!
Meeting Bart through Political Emphasis Week
By Diane Hempel
For some reason, Political Emphasis Week sticks out in my mind, as being such an exciting time. Perhaps it was because my future husband was the chairman and I, being a lowly freshman, was quite impressed! I learned a lot in one short week about the political process, which has stayed with me all these many years.
Campaigning hard for the best candidate
By Carol Holmquist Terry
I recall becoming totally consumed by the happenings of Political Emphasis Week: being a campaign manager for one who was in the race to the finish -- heart, mind, and soul; making elaborate and creative signs which were placed all over campus in strategic places; entering Kirk Hall and other off-limit places to females in order to distribute campaign propaganda (actually entering individual rooms and putting gimmicky items on pillows); loud speakers blaring from vehicles as candidates wound their way through the campus; experiencing the ultimate defeat of my candidate in a very hard fought and close race (Coleman and Franken, you have nothing to talk about!); becoming completely overcome by exhaustion; and vowing never again to enter the political arena, real or otherwise!
