Silent Night
By Katharine (Kay) Cole Burke
One of my most poignant memory of Macalester is revisited every Christmas. The last chapel before break was an evening service. The service would end with the traditional individual candle lighting and singing of "Silent Night." We would exit quietly with our lit candles with some continuing to hum the carol. As we walked back to the dorms in the quiet of the night with only the soft humming and crunch of the snow beneath our feet we made a flickering trail glowing in many directions. The awe inspired by this sight has stayed with me these fifty years and although I have celebrated this ceremony many times hence, none has been as memorable.
