Our 'Remember When' stories

Clubs and Activities

Cheerleaders in Kilts
By Nancy Davis McKay

I was on the first cheerleading squad to wear Macalester tartan kilts. It created quite a sensation and the St. Paul Pioneer press even came to the campus to take pictures of us. A true Oskie Wow Wow experience.

Not about winning
By Milton Bauer

Even though our baseball team won four games in four years, I enjoyed being part of Mac sports.

A good run
By Stephen Skjold

I ran track. Even though the running could be solitary there was much teamwork and we just had a wonderful 50th reunion.

A high flying group
By Elizabeth (Liz) Larson Spangenberg

I was a member of "Flying Scots." We flew to Stillwater, Oklahoma for a "Flying Meet" with Bill Spangenberg. Mike Alwine was sick the whole trip!

Birthday win!
By Larry E. Glasenapp

In my junior year at Macalester, on my 21st birthday on April 21st, 1959, I homered in my second and third at bat to help Macalester's baseball team achieve a decisive win over St. John's in an MIAC conference game on the Scot's home field.

A well rounded athlete
By Anita Shisler Johnson

I remember playing field hockey along Snelling Avenue, playing golf at Highland Park and playing basketball in the gym. I've given up field hockey and basketball now.

Mac athletics
By Orv Fenstad

I remained active in athletics and was proud that we won and won championships.

So many great clubs and activities
By Jan Pagel Wally

I remember and treasure so many memories of my time at Macalester. Toastmistress Club, Drama Productions, Community Council, Ski Club, Canadian-American Conference, Choral Reading Group, and SPAN were all meaningful experiences for me. Perhaps one of the highlights was the opportunity to visit the United Nations and meet with Eleanor Roosevelt. Of course, living in the dorm with some very delightful and interesting friends enhanced my life.

My first political blunder
By John F. Roschen

Being an on-campus sophomore, I ran against an off-campus junior as a candidate for the Religion Secretary position on the Community Council. The election ended with six votes separating us, necessitating a recount. Before the entire student body at a convocation, the outgoing Community Council president, Tom Nagel, announced me as the winner. In a moment of political naïveté, rather than complimenting my opponent on a well-run contest, I turned to Tom to thank him for his hand in the recount! The embarrassment was his for the moment and mine for the next 52 years.

The origin of "Doby"
By Jacob "Jack" Kosoy

While at Macalester I had the pleasure of being a part of the football team for three years. One day during a practice I made more than the usual amount of mistakes. As a result, Coach Ralph Lundeen said, "Oh you Doberman!" (Doberman was the name of a bungling character of a popular TV show called Sergeant Bilko.) The name stuck, and for the rest of my time at Macalester, I was called "Doby."
