LGBT Life at Macalester

Historical Timeline

Mid-1970s: First attempts to get a Gay and Lesbian organization on campus.

1974: Macalester students participate in the Gay Rights Conference held at the University of Minnesota. Letters to the editor promoting the event are published in Mac Weekly. (See news clipping).

1975: Gay Student Collective receives funding from Community Council.

1978-1979: Macalester Lesbian and Gay Coalition (MLGC) receives Community Council funding.

1978: MGLC holds a dance for its members, supporters and prospective members during fall semester at 30 Macalester Street. Approximately 40 people attend.

1989-1990: First campus chalking, first "walk of flame."

1990-1991: A full-campus Queer Union Dance is held.

1990: MLGC changes name to Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals United (GLBU).

1994: GLBU changes name to Queer Union (QU).

2000: First hire of a full-time professor in LGBT Studies.

2004: First Queers of Color Discussion Group meeting.

2005: First Lavander Graduation celebration, recognizing LGBTQA students of all races and ethnicities and acknowledging their acheivements and contributions to the college. Macalester comes in 2nd for acceptance of its LGBT community in The Princeton Review's Best 361 Colleges.

2006: Macalester is listed in Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students as one of the 100 Best Campuses for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) students in the United States in its first edition. Macalester holds first-ever reunion for LGBT alumni. Over 110 attend.
