LGBT Reunion 2006

Call for LGBT-Related Art

In honor of Macalester College’s first lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) alumni reunion to be held Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2006, Scots Pride, Macalester’s LGBT alumni organization, is seeking art submissions from Macalester alumni, faculty, staff and students. The deadline for submitting proposals for entries is April 1, 2006

This collaborative art show will be in the Lealtad-Suzuki Center at Macalester College, opening Thursday, Sept. 28, and running through October 2006.  An opening reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, as a kick-off event for the LGBT Reunion.

Purpose of show

The purpose of this show is to:

  1. Celebrate the creative talent of the Macalester Community
  2. Provide an opportunity to express one’s experience with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer communities and/or identities
  3. Offer an avenue through which Macalester alumni may connect with currents students, staff and faculty
  4. Provide reunion attendees the opportunity to reflect on their experiences as LGBT Macalester alumni through experiencing this art work

While we expect submissions will be primarily of visual art such as paintings, photographs, etc., we welcome film/video, written, and performance pieces as well.  Please contact the coordinator listed below for questions.

How to submit your art

  1. Submit through email or snail mail the following information:
    1. Name and contact information, class year and/or your role at Macalester
    2. A brief description of the physicality of the work (i.e. dimensions, materials needed for show, is it a single piece or a series?)
    3. A brief description of the motivation behind the work, such as an artist statement and a brief statement of how this work fits the vision for the show.
    4. A short written personal bio/description of the piece (under 200 words) that would accompany the work.
    5. If available, a photograph of the work
  2. The work does not need to be completed at the time of submission, but supplying as much information as possible will help the curators understand more how the work will fit into the rest of the show.
  3. All work will be considered and chosen based on space and additional resources needed for presentation.  Submissions are welcomed by all whom fit the criteria, including allies.  Macalester College reserves the right to deny exhibition at any time based on space, displaying capabilities or other concerns. 
  4. Please note: You are responsible for packing your own work as you see fit.  Works framed with glass will not be accepted. Please use plexi-glass as it decreases the risk of damaging the piece.  Chosen work will receive a purchase order code for mailing items via UPS.  Please indicate in your application the estimated value of your work if over $1,000.

Deadlines

The deadline for submitting a proposal is Saturday, April 1, 2006.  Those whom are chosen will be contacted by Monday, May 1, 2006 .  Chosen works must be received by Friday, Sept. 1, 2006.
