The sites of our exploration have only been open to American travelers since 2004. The Mediterranean coast of Africa, initially colonized by Phoenicians and Greeks, was eventually conquered by Rome, which turned the entire coast into its breadbasket. A million tons of grain each year, cultivated in Africa, were shipped to Rome’s hungry armies. Exotic African animals found their way to Rome’s Colosseum. And, at the behest of the Severan emperors, powerful cities rose, to rival Rome itself in scope, scale, and lavishness.
