Dr. Jane Rhodes
Dean for the Study of Race and Ethnicity

Dr. Rhodes came to Macalester from the University of California, San Diego, where she was an associate professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies and an affiliated associate professor in the Department of Communication since 1999. She was an assistant professor in the School of Journalism at Indiana University from 1991-1996, and an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the State University of New York at Cortland from 1985-1991.

Dr. Rhodes received her Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of North Carolina in 1992, her M.A. in mass communication from Syracuse University in 1984 and her B.A. in biology and psychology from Syracuse in 1977.

Her research interests include race and mass media and African American history and culture. She is a former newspaper and radio reporter and producer.

Dr. Rhodes is the author of Mary Ann Shadd Cary: The Black Press and Protest in the Nineteenth Century (Indiana University Press, 1998). It was the winner of the Outstanding Book Award, History Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Her forthcoming book is Framing the Panthers: Media, Race, and Representation in America (The New Press). She is also the author of a number of articles on race, journalism and mass communication.

Dr. Rhodes brings a wide variety of experience, intellectual strength and energy to the dean's position. As Dean for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, she provides leadership on a host of issues across campus, she also chairs the American Studies Department and teaches courses in the department.
