Senior Seminar in American Studies

The Purpose of this course is to give seniors practical skills that will launch them into the next phase of their lives. The readings for this course were carefully selected to prepare them for graduate school in this discipline. If they do not choose American Studies as a career path, the textual analysis that students complete in this course will be useful in many other fields.

Students will each be assigned a first-year student to mentor. Just as they are expected to be a mentor, they will each receive a mentor from the Univeristy of Minnesota's American Studies Ph.D. program.

They will each be responsible for leading class discussions and as a group will contribute to the American Studies Senior Seminar web page. The written work for this course will include an application for whatever life choice each student plans to make after Macalester. Each student will complete a personal statement and a draft of a writing sample as a part of their life plan.
