Professor Dean's interests are philosophical
anthropology and world view. Her fieldwork was with Afro-Cuban immigrants
in the Twin Cities. She focused on Afro-Cuban religious practices and the
importance placed on dreams in everyday life. She is also interested in
ethical and theoretical issues involved with the application of anthropology.
She has applied anthropology in the medical fields by working on creating
a multicultural curriculum for medical residents at a local teaching hospital.
Also, she has applied anthropology in education at local elementary schools.
She completed her undergraduate work at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire
and received a B.A. in Anthropology in 1980. She attended graduate school
at the University of Minnesota where she received an M.A. (1989) and then
a Ph.D. in 1993.
Professor Dean teaches classes on "Human Nature", on American Indian
world view, on the Anthropology of Religion, on Gender and
Family, Theoretical Anthropology, Applied Anthropology, as
well as introductory classes in Cultural Anthropology.
