demography, social networks, collective memory. I have been doing research on
infertility and on concerns with threats to both human reproduction and social
reproduction over the past 20 years. This has led me to pay close attention to
the social and cultural contexts of reproductive decision making, focusing on
1) people's connection to others (be they kin, co-ethnics, co-workers, or
members of voluntary associations) and the structure of those connections, and
2) the role of ethnic conflict and the politicization of ethnicity in how
people imagine their reproductive well-being. My current collaborative research

courses on African cultures. I also teach a First-Year course on Culture
and Identity through African/Caribbean/French and North American cinema, with a
