Donald Celender was the Edith M. Kelso Professor
of Art. He taught Art History and
Chaired the Art Department for over 40
years at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN.
He received a BFA degree from Carnegie Mellon, and a MEd and PhD from the University
of Pittsburgh. Dr. Celender died March 2, 2005 due to a major illness. His obituary
ran in
The New York Times, March 10, 2005.
A renowned conceptual artist, OK Harris Gallery in NYC
hosted a retrospective of his work June 4 - July 15 and again September 6 -
10, 2005.
Join us in celebrating the reinstallation of 'Sentinel', the Don Celender
sculpture in the Campus Center, 2nd Floor.
During Reunion Weekend, June 2-4, 2006, alumni participated
in a fun Celenderesque survey which was posted as part of the exhibit in the
gallery. Survey Question: Assuming no limitations or practicalities, describe
or illustrate how you imagine a perfect memorial to Don Celender's legacy.
An Art History prize fund has been established
in his name. Contributions can be sent to
the Macalester Art Department.
A celebration of Don's art and life was held
in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center Gallery,
April 1, 2005, attended by many alumni, faculty and friends.
