Gary Erickson

Gary often visits China to study and exhibit ceramics. He recorded his adventures on this blog.

Gary Erickson has been teaches Ceramics 1 and Ceramics 2 at Macalester since 1995. He received his BA in Studio Arts from Hamline University (St. Paul, MN) and his MFA in Ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (Alfred, NY). His abstract ceramic sculpture has been shown nationally and internationally with exhibitions at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Weisman Art Museum and at the Galleria Oriente in Santiago de Cuba. His sculpture is in many private and public collections including the Smithsonian Institute's Renwick Gallery.

Gary has received several grants in support of his work and travel, including from the National Endowment for the Arts, McKnight Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board and Freeman Foundation. He has traveled to Cuba for artist exchanges three times and the past six years traveled to Jingdezhen, the porcelain city of China for residencies at the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute and had a solo exhibition of his work in Jingdezhen during the summer of 2011. His research in China has included production of a teaching video about Jingdezhen porcelain. He is also an avid dancer and teaches salsa dance classes through the PE department. In his Minneapolis studio he also creates architectural leaf imprint tiles and pottery.
