EXPERIMENTAL AND ARTISTS' VIDEO
Art 194, HMCS 194
Professor Jenny Lion
Course Description: This course will integrate history, theory and production in a critical examination of experimental video as an art form, political tool and social practice. The course will be structured around various key issues including: portraiture and autobiography; refigurations of documentary; media activism and advocacy; assertions or representations of difference, 'self' and identity; image appropriation and collage; the presence of the maker and reflexivity; and conceptual, feminist, performative, and structuralist approaches. Art video's relationships to cinema, television and the gallery/museum will also be considered. Coursework will include class discussion, lecture, papers, reading, screenings, and visual analysis. Students will undertake substantial video art production projects, developing their aesthetic, analytic, critical, and conceptual acuity.
