Chinese Language Program
In 2003, the Macalester Department of Asian Languages and Cultures introduced courses focused on Mandarin Chinese. The program has met with good support from the student body. Xin Yang, a tenure-track Chinese professor, joined the faculty in Fall 2007. The coming years promise further expansion of the program. Following is a list of Chinese language courses currently available at Macalester College.
ASIA 101 Elementary Chinese I 4 credits
Elementary Chinese I is the beginning course of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It is the first semester in first-year modern Standard Chinese. This course introduces elementary Mandarin pronunciation, grammar, and orthography (in both Pinyin and characters) from the most basic level. Elementary Chinese II consists of three classroom meetings per week, plus one lab session. Offered Fall semester.
ASIA 102 Elementary Chinese II 4 credits
Elementary Chinese II is a course of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It is the second semester of a two-semester sequence in first-year modern Standard Chinese. This course continues to introduce elementary Mandarin pronunciation, grammar, and orthography (in both Pinyin and characters) to students who have completed the course of Elementary Chinese I or its equivalent. Elementary Chinese II consists of three classroom meetings per week, plus one lab session. Offered Spring semester.

Continuation of 102. Prerequisite: Chinese 102 or its equivalent. Offered Fall semester.
ASIA 204 Intermediate Chinese II 4 credits
Continuation of 203. Prerequisite: Chinese 203 or its equivalent. Offered Spring semester.
ASIA 305 Advanced Chinese I 4 credits
Continuation of 204. Prerequisite: Chinese 204 or its equivalent. Offered Fall semester.
ASIA 306 Advanced Chinese II 4 credits
Continuation of 305. Prerequisite: Chinese 305 or its equivalent. Offered Spring semester.
