Community Resources

In addition to numerous on campus resources, the Macalester campus is blessed to be surrounded by the Twin Cities metropolitian area and an environment conducive to learning and education.

ASIAN

JAPANESE

  • The Japan House on Vernon Street, adjacent to campus, houses three students and the department's native speaker. Living in Japan House, students strengthen their language skills through daily conversation among housemates. The house is also a center for the department's social and cultural activities related to Japan and Asia.
  • In addition to professors, the Japanese language programs hires a native speaker lab instructor to teach supplementary lab instruction classes each week. In addition to their classroom activities, this native speaker lives in Japan House and provides students with yet another resource for cultural study, conversation practice and research.
  • TV Japan, a 24-7 broadcast of Japanese television, is available via satellite on the on-campus cable distribution system.
  • An extensive tutoring program makes use of native speakers from Macalester's diverse international student body.
  • Macalester has developed a close relationship with the Minnesota chapter of the Japan-America Society. This relationship has resulted in numerous seminars, concerts, internships, scholarships and other learning opportunities for students held on campus.
