Vasant Sukhatme, Edward J. Noble Professor and chair of economics, is interested in microeconomics and the economic prospects of developing countries. He teaches courses on microeconomic theory and economic development and a survey course on the work of Adam Smith and Karl Marx. He has been awarded both of the major awards given by the college: the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Thomas Jefferson Award for lifetime teaching, research and service contributions to the college. He visited China in May 2006 in connection with the Faculty Development International Seminar in China; he is currently researching the economic growth experience of China.
