Winston Kyan was born in Rangoon, Burma. He has a BA in Comparative Literature from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Chicago. His current research focuses on the cultural reception of Buddhist art in medieval China and its role in shaping Chinese identity. He joined the Art Department in 2005, where he teaches courses on the arts of China, Japan and the Silk Road.
