Yue-Him Tam, professor of history, was educated in Hong Kong (CUHK), Japan (Kyoto) and the United States (Princeton). Tam is specialized in modern Japanese intellectual history, Chinese cultural studies and Sino-Japanese relations. He teaches Chinese and Japanese history in modern and traditional periods, in addition to an introductory course on East Asian Civilizations and an advanced course on war crimes and memory in contemporary East Asia. Before joining the Macalester faculty, Tam taught the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Bowdoin College and the Ohio State University. He was a visiting scholar at such institutions as the University of Tokyo, Nanjing University, York University and the University of Chicago. He has published widely in Chinese, Japanese and English. Tam holds elected offices in academic organizations in China, sits in the trustee boards of secondary schools in Hong Kong and Minnesota, and serves as honorary president of the San Francisco-based Global Alliance for Preserving the History of World War II in Asia.
