Xin Yang received her Ph.D. in Chinese literature from the University of Oregon in 2006 and her B.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Beijing Foreign Studies University.

She teaches Chinese language and literature, specializing in contemporary literature and culture. Her research projects explore questions of continuity and transformation of Chinese tradition by examining fiction, cyber writing, youth subculture, urban culture and women's writing.

Her recent essay, “Cyber Writing as Urban Fashion: the Case of Anni Baobei,” was published in Southeast Review of Asian Studies.

Yang taught at the College of William & Mary for four years before joining Macalester. In 2004 and 2005, she was an on-site director of the W&M summer study abroad program at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
