JAPAN HOUSE Application Information
Japan House is an on-campus residence, located in a 4-bedroom house on Vernon Street. While living there, students must be enrolled in a Japanese language course (or, with the permission of the Director, another course related to Japan).
Benefits of living in the Japan House:
• intensive language practice and interaction with the Japanese native speaker
• communal living with other students interested in Japanese language and culture
• cable TV (including Japan TV) and DVD/VCR
• opportunities to organize and plan events related to Japan around your own interests (with support from the department)
• an environment supportive of planning for study abroad, or cultural re-entry for students who have been abroad
Responsibilities of Japan House residents:
• a commitment to communal life (cooperative cooking and cleaning)
• desire and effort to speak Japanese in everyday life situations
• a desire to do outreach activities related to Japan—at Mac, or beyond
Japan House Manager
The below application also has an application for Japan House Manager. One student each semester is chosen for this paid student position. Responsibilities include:
• ensuring Japanese is spoken at Japan House and that the environment is conducive to learning Japanese
• organizing, along with other house residents, a once per month cultural activity for the Macalester community
• producing and distributing the Japan House newsletter at least twice per semester
