Opening and
Setting Up the Telescope
IN LAB
- Make sure the 'HALT MOTORS' button is in.
- On the Motor Chassis (blue box), make sure every
switch is on, except the 'External Computer.'
- Turn on computers:
- Power to the telescope computer is under the
panel on the front of the Motor Chassis. This powers the TCS
computer (dual monitors).
- Double-click on "Shortcut to DFMTCS" to start
the TCS control program.
- Open "The Sky" program.
- Turn on Planck (if you are planning on doing CCD observations). Login as "macalester"
with no password and make sure the "Workstation only" box is checked.
- Check the clock on the TCS computer:
- Go to The
Official U.S. time clock (bookmarked in Firefox on the TCS
computer)
- Make sure the UT time and date on the TCS control
panel are nearly identical to the official ones.
- If a change is needed, in the menu select Telescope ->
Initialization -> Date/Time tab change the date
and time so it matches the offical time.
- Set the tracking rates by selecting in the menu Telescope -> Rates
-> Track Rates tab.
- Enter 15.279 for the R.A. and -0.005 for the Dec.
- Release 'HALT MOTORS' button.
- Go upstairs to Dome.
IN DOME
- Turn on both the TCS and the remote monitors on.
- In the menu select Telescope -> Misc
-> Switches tab
Turn 'dome' to OFF and 'dome home' to OFF.
- Move dome using hand paddle until shutter cable is
within reach. Plug together and open the shutter. (Remember that you
must click the metal bar on top of the box to the proper side in order
for the motor to work).
- UNPLUG! and turn off.
- Under 'Set switches,' turn 'dome' and 'dome home' to
ON.
- Remove the telescope cover (slew south until within
reach).
