Troubleshooting Telescope Operation

HOW TO...
  • Stop while slewing (Emergency Stop):
    2. Movement Menu
    8. Stop
  • Have telescope go to zenith:
    2. Movement Menu
    5. Set Zenith
    ENTER (Ignore 'front panel track switch' message')
    7. Start Slew
  • Take telescope off auto-track:
    3. Rates Menu
    1. Set Track Rates
    Set RA to zeros (hit ENTER all the way down)

IF THE DOME DOESN'T REMEMBER WHERE 'DOME HOME' IS:
  • Make sure dome and dome home are off:
    4. Miscellaneous Menu
    1. Set Switches
    Dome NO
  • Manually set dome to South with handpaddle
  • Enter Dome position into computer:
    1. Initialization Menu
    3. Dome Position
    At Dome Position prompt, type '180.0' and hit ENTER

IF DOME IS SPINNING AND DOESN'T STOP:
  • Wait it out for about 10 minutes
  • If it still hasn't stopped, go to the TCS computer and hit CTRL, ALT, DELETE (together)
  • After the computer reboots, type 'tcs' at the prompt
  • If that doesn't fix it, wait, then repeat the process again

IF THE DOME IS TRYING TO MOVE AND GETS STUCK:
  • Stand on a chair below the dome slit (take the handpaddle with you)
  • Push on the edge of the dome slit and at the same time turn the dome the appropriate direction with the handpaddle

IF THE TELESCOPE DOESN'T KNOW WHERE IT IS:
  • Turn tracking off:
    3. Rates Menu
    1. Set Track Rates
    Set RA to zeros (hit ENTER all the way down)
  • Manually set to zenith with level bubble
  • Turn tracking on:
    3. Rates Menu
    1. Set Track Rates
    Set RA to 15.00 (hit ENTER for the rest)
  • Set telescope position in computer:
    1. Initialization Menu
    2. Set telescope position
    MEAN RA: at zenith RA = Siderial Time (found on the left side of the screen 'S.T.__:__:__') Set RA approximately 15 seconds ahead of S.T.
    DEC = 44o57'00''
    EPOCH = Enter current year (example: May 2002 = 2002.4)
    When S.T. catches up with the number entered for RA hit ENTER
  • Check to make sure it is set to zenith:
    On monitor opper left, telescope HA should be 00.00.00 (or very close to it)
