Macalester Intramural Guidelines & Eligibility

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Recreational activities and competitive sports are a valuable part of a liberal arts education. These physical activities are part of a life-long learning process and complement the academic and artistic knowledge gained at Macalester. The intramural program desires to provide activities of interest to the Macalester Community. The goal is for every individual to participate in an activity of his/her choosing in so far as facilities and equipment permits. Intramural activities are organized on a team and individual basis, as well as recreational and competitive levels, enabling all to participate. Ability is not a primary concern; all you need is desire.

LIABILITY STATEMENT
Participants should understand injury is possible during sports activities. Participation in the intramural program is voluntary; therefore neither the college nor the IM department is responsible for injuries sustained while participating in intramural sports or general recreation. Participants are responsible for providing their own medical insurance coverage and are encouraged to do so. Athletic trainers and training facilities are not generally available for intramural participants. Individuals are responsible for their own care and treatment of injuries. The athletic department staff is not allowed to transport injured individuals. Emergency transportation to medical facilities is available through the college safety office. Individuals with bleeding injuries must suspend participation until blood flow is stopped and the wound is bandaged. All injuries or emergencies should be reported immediately to the facility supervisor and Intramural Director. Team captains are responsible for informing team members of these policies.

ELIGIBILITY
The basic purpose of eligibility rules is to determine eligibility and to provide an equitable program for the Macalester College community. These rules are not designed to "expose" or "punish" violators. The rules have been created as a guide to enjoyable participation rather than as a negative procedure. The "spirit" is important. To encourage a positive approach it is essential for each participant to abide by these rules and enlist the support of all other participants. The result will be a better experience for everyone.

Only Macalester College students, faculty and staff are eligible to participate in intramural activities. Students must be registered for at least one class. Faculty and staff must be registered employees, paid or otherwise, during the semester in which they participate.
